Crisis simulation

An exercise in which the board and crisis team work through a realistic crisis scenario under controlled conditions.

A crisis simulation tests whether procedures work in practice. Participants receive successive pieces of information about a developing situation: a report from a site, a journalist's question, a social media post, a call from the bank. They must establish the facts, take decisions, prepare a first statement and decide whom to inform and in what order.

The exercise can be a tabletop discussion, run step by step, or a more realistic simulation with time pressure and recorded interviews. The choice depends on the organisation's maturity. For a first exercise, a discussion format is usually sufficient.

The most valuable part is the debrief. That is when gaps in authority, contacts, templates or division of roles become visible. For the board, a simulation is a safe way to make mistakes before making them for real. Good practice is to repeat the exercise at least once a year and after any significant change in board membership.
