Thought leadership

Building the standing of a company or its leaders as a credible source of knowledge and views on matters important to the sector.

Thought leadership means sharing knowledge that is valuable to the audience, not just to the company. It takes the form of expert articles, reports, media commentary, speeches or the company's own publications. Its aim is that, on an issue important to the sector, the company or its CEO are among those whose views people seek out.

Credibility requires substance. A piece that repeats generalities or thinly veiled advertising is quickly recognised. Effective material draws on experience, data or analysis the company genuinely has, and takes a clear position on matters it knows well.

For the board, it is a long-term investment. It requires choosing a few topics aligned with the strategy, consistency in publishing and the willingness of board members to give their time. In return it builds a reserve of trust that makes dealings with the media, regulators and customers easier, including in more difficult periods.
