Stakeholder map
A structured overview of the groups and individuals the business depends on, assessing their influence, expectations and attitude.
A stakeholder map answers the question of whose trust matters most to the company. It usually covers customers, employees, banks, investors, regulators, local government, the local community, partners and the media. For each group it sets out their influence on the business, expectations, current attitude and the person responsible for the relationship.
The map is a decision-making tool, not decoration for a strategy document. It shows who will be affected by a planned restructuring, acquisition or price change, who needs to be told in person and in what order. In a crisis it helps establish quickly who should hear about the matter directly from the company before reading about it in the press.
For the board, what matters is that the map is current and discussed regularly. A simple format works best: one page showing which relationships are strong, which are neglected and which need action.
