Public affairs
Managing a company's relationships with government, local authorities, industry bodies and other participants in public debate.
Public affairs covers the activities through which a company understands its regulatory and political environment and is understood within it. They include analysing planned changes in legislation, taking part in consultations, working with industry bodies, relations with local government and preparing positions on matters that affect the business.
Effective public affairs rests on transparency and sound argument. The company sets out its position openly, supports it with data and impact analysis, and conducts contacts with public authorities in line with the applicable rules. Where lobbying activity is regulated, it should proceed with a lawyer involved.
For the board, public affairs is part of managing risk and opportunity. A change in regulation can determine whether an investment pays off. Companies that follow such processes and join the discussion early have more time to prepare and a better chance that their arguments will be heard.
