Press correction

A procedure under Polish press law allowing a company to demand publication of a factual correction of untrue or inaccurate information.

A correction concerns facts, not opinions. A company may demand that untrue or inaccurate information be corrected, but not an assessment, a comment or the tone of an article. The rules set requirements for form, length and the deadline for the request, and the publisher may refuse in certain circumstances. The text is therefore best prepared with a lawyer involved.

A correction is a legal instrument, but its effects are communicative. It can put the record straight in archives and search results, yet it can also prolong the story and prompt a further article. Sometimes a conversation with the editor, providing documents or a statement published on the company's own channels is more effective.

For the board, the key question is what it wants to achieve. If the aim is to correct facts that matter to customers or partners, a correction may be the right choice. If it is about wounded pride, it usually is not.

Let’s talk about your situation.
